Hi guys, my 1979 F259 4x4 with a 351m won't start. I have a new battery, carb rebuilt, new spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor. It ran really good for awhile besides an idle problem. One day my dad tried to start it and idk where it went wrong from there. now the truck will turn over good, but won't fire. i seem to be getting spark at the plugs or the 4 that i checked. I know it is getting gas because i poured some down the carb and it one time out of four started up for about 20 seconds then died again. the new parts were put on about 2 years ago i would say, but they have less than 3 hours on them because I was working on the body mostly when i would come home from college. Just wondering if anyone had some suggestions, they would be greately appreciated.
na, i drained the tank and put new in it. the gas in my 500 gal tank still smells good and everything else was running good off it. I usually only put about 2 gallons in the tank, but i ended up putting 4 or 5 in there to make sure that it was getting enough in the tank.

If you poured gas down the carb, it's gonna fire, sounds like the fuel pump isn't pumping to the carb, I'd check to see if it is pumping fuel by looking into the top of the carb and pushing the accelerator a couple of times to see if it is misting fuel into the carb. If you've been cranking it for awhile, it may be that the plugs are fuel soaked and may need to be dried out. Also, I would push the gas pedal to the floor and crank it a couple of times to see if it may be flooded. Just a couple of options for you to try. Hope it helps.
well lol, its the original motor with about 115,000 on it. my dad said that it has a weak cylinder he had it pressure checked. yeah it has a inline fuel filter right before the carb, it is getting fuel also. I forgot to say i replaced that awhile ago also. its getting gas into the carb misting like you suggested. Just won't fire for some off for some reason. Like i said i poured gas down the carb and it fired off the first time. but after that it didn't do a thing
If it did any kind of mis fire it might have stripped the fibre cam gear and caused it to be out of time.
Do you know how to do a chain to gear slop test ?
Or mechanically set the #1 piston to TDC at top of Power stroke... and then view the position of the distributor rotor compared to the #1 position on the dist cap ?
if the accelerator pump is pumping it sounds like you may have water or something, that would be just like pouring gas in it
I would drain carb and try again
yeah its been like 4 months since i played with it so we'll seewhat happens. and yeah i have no clue how to do any of that studd suggested by million lol
Now put the breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft bolt and turn it one direction or the other until you see the rotor in the dist turn a little......... stop
Now you need to reference the breaker bar as in a circle.
Start turning the crankshaft the OTHER direction making note of how many degrees of a circle it takes before the rotor starts to move. 10*, 20*, 30*,45* etc
