I used to have a '92 F-250 4x4 and had some Edelbrock IAS Shock. They were great - much better than anything Gabriel or Monroe could produce at the time. That was 8 years ago. I have a '96 F350 one ton 4x4 that rides pretty rough (I know it's unloaded springs) and wallows quite bit. I would like a shock that has great ride control but is not too firm - and lasts a long time. What is good in shocks these days?
I too would like to know. I'm getting tired of riding on the two tree stumps back there (7 leafs on each side). Will a good set ease the ride on the rear end or am I going to have to live with it? BTW, this truck rides like a cady with about 2500# in the back but with gas over $3.25 a gal, I can't afford to haul the weight every day.

shocks can smooth the ride of an average rate spring because they are absorbig alot of the blow and really are just slowing the springs reactions (all shocks are designed to do is dampen the movement of springs so they dont just bounce around) in your case the rough ride is a result of spring that are so stiff they don't flex as much as others when an average bump hits them by not giving at the spring the give comes by tossin the rest of the truck up. differnt shocks could lighten up your ride if your springs are able to flex normally but the problem with pick ups (well not really problem cuz we need it to use them how we do) is that the springs are stiff and dont flex like a cars would to allow for that cadillac ride.
Monroe Gas Magnums are realy good and are reasonably priced.. they make my f250 ride fantastic on and off road... (although maybe they seem better than they should because the old shocks were 13 year old originals lol)
Unloaded, I couldn't tell if I had shocks out back or not on my F350 crewcab, the springs are that stiff. In fact, a couple of summers ago I discovered 2/3 of one had rotted off (and that 2/3 was completely missing!) when I loaded gravel in the back and she bounced all over the place.
But, I hadn't noticed until I loaded the truck down quite a bit. Just curious...
Anyway, because of this, out back I have the cheapest, generic HD shocks I could find.
I have motorcrafts on the front and they seem pretty good.

I believe that they still make the Edelbrock IAS shocks. I just put a set on the front of my F-250 this summer. So, if you liked them a lot before, I would suggest checking them out again. I got mine through Summit because they were on cleareance. Maybe something for you to check out as well. I've been pleased so far, but when I got the truck I needed shocks bad. To bad I don't have any stories of comparison for you, just that what I have was a dramatic improvement over the worn out ones that I used to have.

I was on Edelbrocks site last night and they don't have a listing for my application of F-350. I have a 460 gasser and they only have a listing for a power stroke.
I have Rancho RSX shocks on mine and they do a nice job. For years I had the RS5000 series on it, but these RSX shocks are in my opinion much better. The RS5000 only act as dampers up and down or in and out if used as a steering stabilizer. The RSX shocks are gas charged. They also have poly of silica bushings instead of rubber ones. The rubber ones in my old RS5000 shocks didn't last more than a few years. I know that the Bilstien and Edelbrock IAS shocks are good. If you can't find your application listed try emailing them and just ask. We had Monroe gas magnum I believe it was on our old 85 years ago and they were alright shocks. I don't like the gabriel or any of that cheap stuff. They just don't hold up or last.

I got a deal on the Bilsteins when it came time to replace the original shocks. They were like 15$ more each than the Monroe Gas shocks I had put on the front a few months prior so I decided to give them a try. The back end is quite "lively" when I drive unloaded, but never to the point of compromising control of the vehicle and I drive the dirt back roads often. I usually have at least 1000lbs in the bed, probably closer to 1500 (tools and materials) and she rides way better loaded. I also play with my tire pressure if I know I'm taking a long trip unloaded
