5th wheel capabilities?

I have a 66 F250 with a 300 ci engine and a 4 speed. If I mounted a 5th wheel hitch in the bed, could it pull a 30 ft. gooseneck trailer? Here is a picture of the trailer with a typical load on it.

Not really anything set in stone, just wondering what the truck can do. I would have to check with the other 4 owners of the truck first!

I am no expert on this but, you would have to look at the gvw of the truck and compare it to the trailer. Does your truck have disk brakes on it? also does the truck have a brake controller for the trailer? there are a lot of things to look at when you hook onto a trailer that size. I was not able to look at the trailer so Im just kinda going of what I have experienced with towing in the past. Good luck!!

I believe it will tow it quite easily. i have a 67 double axle pull type camper (piece of junk) that i built my own gooseneck on and i have pulled it all over eastern Montana with my 64 F-100 4 WD. it also has a 300 6cyl. i have recently aquired a 66 F-250 w/300 6 cyl. that i am going to pull it with in the future. i never had any issues with the 64. the only thing i would recomend that you install a good electronic brake controller like Okieweld mentioned in his thread. if you are still using your original brakes on the truck it is very important that you do that as these brake setups leave a lot to be desired when you are pulling a load. as far as hitch weight goes that will not be an issue with the f-250. keep in mind that you average speed will probably be around the 55 MPH range if you are still running the stock motor. when i go campin i am never in a hurry anyway. either it's a one beer drive or a two beer drive. LOL ( i didn't say that) happy campin Dutch

I've towed 10,000lbs many times. I however had 4.56 gears, power disc brakes, a stock 352 and a C6. Oh, and a good brake controller. Not exactly apples to apples though. Used to also tow our 8,000lb 5'er camper a lot. Our Excursion is the preferred tow vehicle now.

Big DITTO on the electronic brake controller, I use my 66 to tow quite a bit, but I am up in the mtns. here, and I would not tow that load of tractors, w/o disc brakes. I regularly tow a 29.5hp 4x4 Kubota with large front bucket and rear gannon on my 16' trailer with mine, but all told I think it is about 5500-6200# I wouldn't go much over that with stock drums (which I have, and have NO issues) If your on the flats, not as big an issue as dropping down a 6-9% grade for 3-4 miles.

I hate to be a kill joy but that is way to much trailer for your truck to tow safely.
That looks like around 20,000 lbs to me, way to much for a stock F-250. I pull a 25' gooseneck with a 79 F-250 4x4. It has a built 400 (still not enough power), extra spring leaves and overloads on 315-70-16 Goodyear MT/R's. I'm legal to 26,000 lbs but have gone short trips over 30,000 lbs. Truck does pretty well but eats Spicer u-joints regularly. I used to tow a 20' gooseneck with my (lumberyards) 78 F-250 2wd, 300-6 4speed. I could scale 20,000 to 21,000 lbs but that really worked it hard. As a side note I have pulled the 25' trailer with the 78 before but it does not do well at all.
Hope this helps.

Thanks wizzard. That's just a small part of our collection. You got any tractors? I could go on forever, but I don't think that anybody came to a Ford forum to hear about Case tractors.

My grandpa is usually the one pulling that trailer. He has a 2500 Silverado, not sure of the engine. I was just wondering what kind of load my truck will pull, in case I want to haul a couple tractors to a show.

Unhappy trailer pullin'

JDBJ, you might be able to pull the weight, but that trailer in your photo will overload your rear axle, I'm guessing by about double or more. You need to figure out how much weight your rear axle can carry, how much tongue weight the trailer has, and how much the front two tractors weigh. I don't think you even close on this one.
