I picked up a '90 Bronco with a 302 in it. I got the rig for 600 bucks and of course it needs work. It needs rear main, oil pan and valve cover gaskets at least. I also think it needs an oil pump. I am just going to pull the motor to do it all and was wondering if there are any tips or tricks to it. I know the Bronco sits pretty high and I don't see my hoist picking up high enough to clear the core support. So I though i'd check here to see if anyone had any info. Thanks in advance.
I just pulled mine, and I have a 2 ton hoist and it picked it up just enough. Other than that, just make sure you get everything unhooked, take out the radiator and remove the fan. Those two helped tremendously, and they are easy to do. Hope that helps.
I pulled mine last year with a cheap 2 ton hoist, like Sixty9oz said you have to pull the radiator and the fan. Mine just barely made it out. you can always take the tires off to get it lower or even just let most of the air out, this might lower it just enough for you.
I had to deflate my tires to get my engine hoist to clear. A trick would be once you get the engine up swing it around and push down so the sump in the pan can clear. It's really easy. I pulled two of them in a matter of 8 hours or so.
If you feel really active, take the upper intake off so you can get the hoist closer to the block. But like everyone else here, if it is in stock form it will clear with the radiator out of the way and a little bit of tipping the engine so the sump clears the support. I think with the upper intake off it would make it easier to get the engine away from the fire wall plus added room of clearing the core support.
