Fuel Pump

I have a 1951 Ford F3 with a V8 flathead (239). I'm trying to figure out if the fuel pump is a single action or double action. It has a glass bowl so what i'm thinking is that its a dual action? I need to replace the old one which has the glass bowl but the parts magazine I have does not describe which one i need.

Anybody know or know the difference between the single and dual? How do I tell?

Thanks.

I think what they describe as a double acting fuel pump is a combination fuel and vacuum pump. They started using them about 52. The idea was to have a more consistent vacuum source to run the windshields wipers. I think the two are interchangeable in that they use the same stands and pushrods.

There was a minor change made in the fuel pumps around 51 where the size of the thread on the outlet was increased but a trip to the hardware store can take care of that.

I read somewhere the dual action had the vacuum feed for wipers and it was used on Mercury cars for one. My 49 sedan doesnt use this dual one.

I believe the size was actually decreased. The flange around the inlet boss is skinnier than the earlier pumps as well. I have 2-3 of the 51-53 pumps.

Before ordering one on line check out your local quality auto parts store like NAPA or locally owned store, if you have one near by. I bought the pump for my F-4 a couple of years back from NAPA for $40.

If you want to have a little fun go down to the chain auto parts store and ask for one. Also, tell him it's for a flathead. First the kid behind the counter will act like he's the world's most knowledgeable parts guy, then he'll spend ten minutes scanning his computer before telling you he doesn't have it. Those places are the biggest waste of time.
