Hi Ed

The glass bowl should be facing up At least thats the way my 54 merc car is. By the way I let that fuel pump go on E bay because I ended up buying a rebuild kit. Thought it would be faster and of coarse the kit hasn't arrived yet.

Well I see you has two different views now

Chuck

Ed,the fuel pump must be mounted with bowl down.If you have water or trash in the line it will go into the bowl and you can clean it out. Russell

As original, the glass bowl is down. I've had about 30 vehicles with these filters and have never seen one mounted any other way.

Yep, bowl down and they can be a PITA to seal up at the top, any little leak and you will lose the vacuum.

Mine originally had a glass bowl, mounted down. Sediment collects at the bottom.

Originally call a sediment bowl by drivers. Early fuel filter. Now I would put a changable filter in the fuel tank output even in a restoration vehicle. Saves on carb clogs etc. Bowl down is the correct way. This is the first time I've heard of someone having a upside-down bowl. Have a great day, chuck

OK, gotta dissent with some pretty smart dudes here.... My '53 215 has the bowl up. Can't go the other way, pump flange won't fit, and the illustration manual has it up as well. If I were smart enough I'd post a pic here. I agree, before this one I'd always seen them down to collect sediment, but can't argue with my own eyes. scottmotorsports has the similar '54 223, I suspect.

What pump flange? On the early fuel pumps, on 6's and Flathead V8's, the glass bowled fuel filters were part of the pump. Later, they were installed in the line on the V8's. The 6's were still mounted either in the pump, or in the line next to the pump. Why there? Because otherwise the filter, if installed in-line near the carb would be close to the exhaust manifold. When the 6's got warm, a glass bowled fuel filter installed near the carb would have the gas vaporized by the radiant heat from the manifold. That will cause vapor lock.

These have the bowl on the top of the fuel pump. It's a built-in part of the pump. The fuel pump would have to be mounted upside down to get the sediment bowl to hang down, and the flanges wouldn't fit. Sorry if I'm being confusing.

I completely understand and agree with what you're saying about the vapor lock, but all this is on the opposite side of the carb and manifolds. I didn't trust the bulb alone, and put an in-line filter next to it as well.

I'll try to post a pic. Where do I find directions to do that here and not in the gallery??

Lotta bugs on here..some are human...

I looked at pics before I typed that last post. I saw the pic with the bowl upside down on the pump, so I'm not confused about that. Everything else...

I'm familiar with the "confused about everything else" disease. Got a serious case o'dat.

If you look at my "more progress" gallery and look close in the right-sided photos, you can see a pic. Took a close-up, but the board isn't taking uploads right now.
