97 Ranger AC/Heat Problem...

My wive's truck, 97 XLT 2.3L, 5-speed has an interesting problem, so I thought I would turn to you all for some assistance...

I've noticed the last few times I've started it (about a dozen times in the last month) that the ac compressor is kicking on about 4-10 seconds after startup. The controls inside the truck are not set on AC, MAX, or defrost... but it seems to consistently do this.

Not only that, but for some reason, when you do want to run the AC, it only blows cold air on MAX AC. AC yields only HOT air (not warm... hot, heater hot).

Also, the temp. control dial seems to be unresponsive when in any setting (floor, vents, def, ac, max ac).... at times it will be all hot no matter where the temp dial is, other times it will be all cold no matter where the temp gauge is.

It was suggested to me that the flap was broken... so I managed to stick my arm all the way down the duct after pulling the vent off and I was able to feel the flap moving itself as it should when I would switch it to MAX AC or defrost.

So..... you can understand my frustrations, right??? Any suggestions?

STan

P.S. Keep in mind that these are vacuum controled, not cable.

The A/C will run in all modes except "Off", "Vent" and "Floor". Don't know if that helps.

The air temperature issue is related to the blend door and has nothing to do with vacuum. (The blend door is not the same thing as the "flap" you were playing with). Either the door is broken, or the motor that controls it (the blend door actuator or BDA) is shot. Check out:

Thanks Rock...

A/C is running in all modes, including off, vent and floor... any ideas (other than simply unplugging it... which I've already done).

Thanks for the link to the blend door... I'll try to dig into that this weekend maybe...

I do know that on most vehicles, the a/c pump will be switched on periodically, even when you're not using a/c, in order to lubricate the pump and keep it from rusting/seizing up. The lubricant is contained within the freon coolant, so it litteraly has to pump a bit to lubricate itself.

I also know that if you're extremely low on freon coolant, the pump might switch on momentarily, but it'll kick off and won't kick back on, to keep from running without lubricant.

Hope that helps some...
