I seen a B-17 flying south of town yesterday. It was only a few thousand feet of the ground. Let's see, 4 engines turning will burn 200 gallons of fuel an hour. 200 X's @$5.00 a gallon avgas = Ouch! And thats just the fuel.
Was there an airshow in town? I couldn't imagine why there would be a random flying fortress stored in a hanger in wichita. That must have been a cool sight though. All the b-17's I have seen have been on the ground.
I remember a few years ago watching one of the large carrier planes fly, (military) the thing was huge, we actually had to stop the car and get out to see if it was flying or hovering, it seemed like it moved at a snail's pace.
Yes, they do seem to just hang in the air. One that will make you think it is stuck in the air is a PBY Catalina. It's huge and is even slower than a B17. They brought a B29 and a B24 to Garden City a few years back and I asked them how high they flew the 29. They said they kept it low to avoid stressing the engines, like below 10K and I bet they do the same with the 17.
Based on the direction he was going I'm guessing Salina or Hutch. If you watch the local papers they often will announce that a XXYY will be at such and such airport for photos and flights. Probably what he was doing.
About 25 years ago there was either a B17 or B24 plus a P51 at the airport in Hastings Ne. for display and they allowed people to go into the B. They also had a set of steps to go up and look into the cockpit of the P51. My mom took my girls to see the planes and we stayed until they took off. The bomber took forever to get airborn, but the sound of those engines was something else. When the P51 took off it just seemed to shoot into the air. It was a real hot rod.
Every once in awhile, when I was working out by McConnell, you could watch a C-4 (i think) galaxie take off, it would shake the whole shop and you couldn't hear a thing over the engines lol
