I've got a 87 F-250 with a carburated 460 and I have no spark. I have swapped coils out to no avail and I have even ran a jumper wire to give the coil juice thinking that that may be the problem. How can I determine if it is the pickup within the distributor or if it is the ignition control module itself?
I assume you have checked for broken wires or a broken rotor. Beings the components are dead and not an intermittent no start, you can probably get them tested. I would test the ignition module first, beings it is the easiest to remove.
Testing an ignition module off the vehicle can be difficult unless it's failed completely. The modules usually fail when they overheat. Once they cool...at least for a time, the vehicle can be restarted.
If you have the module on the dizzy, those were a POS from the get go, and is prolly the reason your truck won't start. You will need a thin shanked Torx driver to remove it.
Don't forget...inside the dizzy is the pickup coil...the usual rule of thumb is, if you replace the module, the pickup coil (also known as a stator) should be replaced, too.
