Speedometer Malfunction

I was driving the other day (at 60 mph) and all of a sudden my speedometer dropped to 35 mph. I stopped the truck and the speedo still said 35. What could be the problem? Thanks for your help!

BTW THe truck is a 97 4.2L V-6 with an auto trans.

Thanks again!

Your speedometer is driven by a cable that gets its reading from a plastic gear in the tailshaft of your transmission. I would suspect the cable or gear has broken...or you have a problem in the cluster. I'm not sure of how it attaches to the cluster though...

I thought it might be a broken speedo cable, but the problem is intermittant, I should have mentioned that above, I think it's probably the cluster too, I just figured I would get some input from you guys here.

Thanks

Might be a stripped gear inside the cluster. It will catch sometimes and read just fine, but then it will hit the spot where the gears are stripped and stop working.

Just a thought...

I do believe now that it's the cluster. I replaced the speed sensor (speedometer is not cable driven) and the truck still has the same problem.

Will this work in my truck? It looks identical but as the ad states it is out of a van.

Uhhh...'97 and '98's should be cable driven (I'm 90% certian). Where was the sensor that you replaced?

It was on the driver side of the tailshaft housing. I did not see any speedometer cable.
