I was driving the other day (at 60 mph) and all of a sudden my speedometer dropped to 35 mph. I stopped the truck and the speedo still said 35. What could be the problem? Thanks for your help!
BTW THe truck is a 97 4.2L V-6 with an auto trans.
Your speedometer is driven by a cable that gets its reading from a plastic gear in the tailshaft of your transmission. I would suspect the cable or gear has broken...or you have a problem in the cluster. I'm not sure of how it attaches to the cluster though...
I thought it might be a broken speedo cable, but the problem is intermittant, I should have mentioned that above, I think it's probably the cluster too, I just figured I would get some input from you guys here.
Might be a stripped gear inside the cluster. It will catch sometimes and read just fine, but then it will hit the spot where the gears are stripped and stop working.
