I need your help I don't know how to approach this issue with my speedometer in my truck 92 superduty 7.3 the problem is that the gauge needle jumps from cero to 35-40 mph but don't work in between what could be the problem here thanks
There's a drive and a driven gear .. pull the driveshaft and remove the bolt and yoke then seal ..
The drive gear slides off .. replace with a new one .. hammer in a new seal reinstall yoke and shaft ..
Replace driven gear on end of spedo cable ..
** full disclosure ** i just looked up how to do it as mine is also wore out gears .. and i need different teeth counts because of tire size changes .. gonna fix mine too but haven't got to it yet . it's just 2 plastic gears that wear out .. you can try just the driven gear but usually one takes out the other as they wear out .
I'm fairly sure 92 uses the VSS sensor in the rear axle.
Some have had luck cleaning the connector and pulling the Sensor and cleaning it.
If there is lots of particulate on the sensor, check your rear gears out.
I believe they Ohm out at 1.0 good ...
Finding quality replacements VSS sensors may be tough ... Might be best to source an original from a salvage yard.
If the carrier (or tone ring) in your rear axle is bad, it will also do the same thing.
