I just completed the conversion from '88 7.3 auto to manual. I had a donor truck '89 complete but rusted to death. Here is what had to be installed and some of the issues I had.
1. Foot pedal assembly, going from 2 pedal to 3 pedal. There is no way to mount a clutch pedal on the auto pedal mounting setup, but other than having to remove a bunch of trim and steering column, speedo cable etc, the 3 pedal setup bolts right in.
2. Clutch master cylinder. Ford left a factory hole in the firewall, but it was too small and had to be drilled w. a holesaw. this was a bit of a pain in the neck because there was no pilot hole.
3. Clutch master to slave cylinder line. Do not damage this, it has pins on the ends to mount and is a little tricky to remove, however, it is $70 to replace if you damage it.
4. I did not install a clutch depress switch as I always start my truck in neutral.
5. Floor hump is identical except for the hole in it for the shifter
my auto sounds like it is toast. before i spend a ton of money fixing this one, has anyone heard of putting an allison behind a psd? can it be done or is it benificial?

It could be done but its not economical. You would need a stand alone computer for the Allison, adapter plate and even when adding power to the D-max they are finding the Allison isn't as strong as its root! Above stock levels of the D-max the Allison fail with regularity. You could get a nearly indestructable E4OD for much less. I would guess it would take about $7-10K to get an Allison in there and you can have a BTS E4OD for just under $5K
im looking for indestructable. my tranny guy thinks about 4k will get it done. is the BTS the way to go? does it come with a new torque converter? the allison was just a thaught and thats where im going to leave it
BTS is a great trans. It does come with a TC as well. RacerXautomotive.com also has great kits it you have a trans guy who would be willing to install them.
ok let me get in here with a question i have a 90 f350 7.3 inj pump with a 5 speed that does not have low gear its a high gear truck. but my 96 is the 7.3 powerstroke has an e4od does anyone know for sure if the trans will bolt to the powerstroke and if the clutch pressure plate flywheel assy will bolt to the crank are they interchangeable in other words im aware its alot of work but will the inj pump flywheel etc bolt up 2 the turbo diesel i need my 96 asap for work the 90 is just a car hauler i dont need right now. any help will be appriciated but please only reply if you know for sure it will or wont work thanks in advance Keith
