I live in AZ where I have to get emission tested every freaking year. Anyways I never had a problem until today, Ran it through and it failed. I have fresh oil and averything seems to run good otherwise, I ordered a 6637 so you guys will be happy that I ditched the K&N but the only thing I can think of that I changed from last year was that I did the FPR mod and shimmed it. Would this cause me to fail the test? I was thinking of moving my MAP sensor back to the intake side, right now it's hooked up to the hot side by the turbo since it helps with turbo lag with the intercooler.
more info.... what do they test? tailpipe? and if so what part failed? the fpr shim should help in theory since higher fuel pressure at point of injection leads to better atomozation.
I hate the test they do, you have to hold it floored for like 10-15 secs at a time, and you have to repeat this like 6 times. Failed some particulate thing, forget what it was called, I don't have the paper infront of me now, but allowed like 40 and scored a 52
I think I can do better when I do it next time tho, just can't punch the pedal, but more just ease into it until revved up.
when i lived in cali and had to deal with emissions bs i always ran the cars hard and on the interstate for about an hour before going in for testing also fuel quality can make a differance as well.
make sure the engine is good and hot, diesels dont burn efficiently cold or even luke-warm. hot is best. also you can try turning the chip down or off. might help there. i dont think it would take much to pass it. mix a little kerosene in your tank, it will burn a little hotter then the ulsd at the pump.
Well I drove it to work and to the emisions place after, so put like 50 miles on today, it's about 25 miles to the emisions place where I work, and mostly highway. I thought about the fuel thing and did switch tanks before I got there, and I can't remember if that was the tank that I got diesel from up north a few weeks back. But I will definitely get some better stuff, do you think that Diesel clean would effect it, that may have been in it too....
It was hot for sure, almost 100 today, so temp wasn't a problem.
I was talking to a friend who has a 97 and he said that when his wife took theirs through, she told them it had a lot of miles and didn't like reving it up, so they just did an idle test and went through, I'm going to try this since I'd have no problem passing that and I HATE holding it revved up like that, especially 6-8 times!!
Ill be a smart a$$....cut your cat off and move from Az........sorry,never got all that emission or inspection crap(just another way for states to make a few extra bucks IMO.....dont get me going on toll roads either),thank god we dont have it here.I do not think I will ever move to a place that does
I know...like I said, just being a smart a$$.....I like Joes idea by adding a bit of kero to your tank...it burns really clean(get the clear stuff if you can ...TSC or Home Depot should have it)...Your buddys wife has the right idea too....they would see my foot well before my floor if they asked me to hold wide open for 6-8 seconds for that many times( < another smart a$$ remark...sorry,a little hung over today )
I feel for you. Lived 27 years down there and I can say without reservations Arizona DMV is the most miserable experience anyone can go through. I ended up saying screw it and just took the whole day off. Unless you contest their findings you have to have a certified mechanic sign the failure receipt before re-testing, or at least it used to be that way.
I would think your map sensor going back to the cool side would help. you're putting a little extra fuel before the air gets there. that's why the lag is less...
also, set your tuner (banks... really???) back to stock... if you can.
Its not a tuner, I think it is just a chip, and I've never had to take it out all the years before. And to be honest I'm not even 100% sure it is in there or just stock
