I am pulling apart the 302 that is in my 63 ford and i found out that it has 351 heads on a 302. My qustion is there a diffrence between a 302 head or 351. I will be putting a tunnel ram on the 302 that i got with the truck and i want to know if there is a diffrence in 302 heads and 351 Heads. Someone once told me that there is a diffrence in intakes but idk. Thanks and would heads should i put on there...
There are many different 302 heads and many different 351 heads.
All 302 heads are drilled for 7/16" head bolts, while 351 heads are drilled for 1/2" head bolts.
Typically 351s have larger valves and intake passages, but in the late 70s all this was the same and the only difference between the two was the bolt hole size.
There are also water passage differences between the early heads, as well as the early 351s (1969-73?) having an extra pair of intake manifold bolts.
Despite all this, the heads are interchangeable with a bit of fooling around.
I have a set of 351 heads and a set of 302 heads, which one would you suggest using, which ones could i get the most power out of plus i will be running a tunnel ram intake.
If the 351 heads have the extra intake bolt holes and "L" shaped coolant ports, those are the good 351 heads with the bigger (slightly) intake ports and valves (again, only slightly bigger) you'll need to use alminum head step washers on the head bolts to use 7/16" bolts on 1/2" holes. This part isn't manditory, but I wouldn't do it otherwise.
It would be easier to answer the question if you would list the codes for each head. Besides valve and port size, combustion cc's and quench are considerations in which head is better.
Without the codes nobody is going to have any idea. Be careful. Those old 351W heads like D0VE and all had 60 CC chambers. Most common 302 heads had 64CC chambers

D0VE heads were 429/460's. Smaller chambers are a good thing.
