Whats the diffrence?

I just had a argument with a guy about one of my trucks.
1994.5 Powerstroke , I know its a Powerstroke but he says his is also a 94 and isnt a Powerstroke.
I know they started making Powerstrokes half way through 94 but I couldnt think of any diffrences to back up my argument..........

So my question is whats the diffrence between a Powerstroke and a Turbo Diesel and how do you tell the diff?

'94 had 7.3 IDI, 7.3 ID Turbo, and 7.3 PSD.
The IDI have fuel lines running externally to each head.

Just look at the engines the idi also has this big thing on top that looks like a air cleaner on a carb engine.

The turbo engine has a large airbox right on top of the engine. The turbo sets more to the right at a different angle. Very different engines.

The 94 IDI turbo does not have a big round air cleaner on it has a weird air box that sais turbo on it ,the turbo is also mounted different than a powerstroke ,and the oil fill cap will be on the front middle of the motor

Thanks for all the answers.

Are the glow plugs and the injectors visable on a Turbo diesel or are they under the valve cover like a Powerstroke?

My other baby...built with my very own hands and a little help from my engine machinist neighbor.

Not exactly stock, 94 turbo injection system, modified
DPS Stage 1 injectors
94 turbo valves, rockers and cam
Milled pistons to drop the compression ratio from 22.5 to 1 down to 20.25 to 1 so the heads would stay on with 25 pounds of boost.
ARP head studs
Modified ATS turbo system
87 6.9 block
Lots more little tweaks here and there for that little extra edge.
Externally the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI are identical and most parts are bolt on interchangable, that engine is about 1/2 7.3 and 1/2 6.9.

94 7.3 IDI turbo and part of the air cleaner box.

There were several different IDI aftermarket turbo systems which sold thousands of turbos each.

ATS who designed the Stock Ford system, ATS 093, that also had two previous systems, 085 and 088.
Banks had three or four systems.
Hypermax also had a system.
Plus there were a few other systems out there.

All were slightly different in where the turbo sat, how it was plumbed in, and where and what the air cleaner looked like.
Some even used the stock filter housing, just relocated it to the front and side enough to clear the turbo to intake plumbing.

Glow plugs and injectors outside the valve covers.
Injection line to each injector from the injection pump, which is located where the HPOP is on a Stroke.

I had to install a Diamond Eye 3" to 4" exhaust, 6637 mod, 140 volt IDM and FPR shim before my 97 would keep up with or run as much boost as the IDI did.
With the addition of the DP Tuner, the 100 HP setting has the Stroke in the lead, slightly, and most of that is from the automatic tranny.

I just wish I knew as much about a Power Stroke as I do about an IDI, but I am learning thanks to you guys.
