A/C Question

A/C Question
I have a question about the A/C clutch on my 66 F100, 352 engine. Between the a/c clutch and the compressor housing, there is a block where the wiring connects. Mine has a short there and I can push on it with a screwdriver and the compressor will engage. Is that part of the compressor clutch or a seperate piece that I can buy? Is the compressor clutch hard to exchange? Special tools required? Thanks!

AC clutch
I assume you have the York or Tecumseh compressor. The clutch is composed of 3 seperate parts. The magnetic coil is the piece you are having trouble with. It sounds like you have a broken wire connection rather than a short. I do not know if the coil is available seperately from the complete cluch unit.
It is fairly easy to replace, but you do need a specialized AC tool kit to do so. It may be available for "free rental" from Autozone or other parts stores.
Basically you use a special bolt to remove the hub (outer part) then remove a large snap ring and use a 2 jaw puller to remove the pressed on pulley, then remove the four bolts holding the coil to the front of the compressor. Keep in mind that this is from my rusty memory so don't take it as exact. Best of luck.
