compressor smoking

compressor smoking due to clutch plate constiently rubing against pulley even with A/C off. what would happen if i took the plate off and the shims until it can get the compressor replaced.. than replace the bolt to hold the pulley on...

The compressor is toast. It probably failed internally and burned up the clutch from slipping. Now the plate is warped enough to rub continually. You're going to need more than a compressor.

For now, just take the clutch plate off. There is a large snap ring holding the pulley on. Don't be surprised if the bearing has failed (or does very soon) due to the heat.

Smile thanks

thats what i was figuring got so hot just driving 3 miles that the connector moved pretty freely. I just wanted second opinion befor I just pulled off the plate. just need to get truck back down to shop where engine was rebuilt to fix leak from intake manifold than going to replace most of the A/C system(Compressor, hose Assy(has a hole on high side), and acculimator) and flush whole system.

Ouch, Rebuilt the motor and the AC craps out. You've got luck like me.

If the compressor did seize up internally, seriously consider replacing the condenser. Debris gets caught in there and resists flushing, only until after the repair. Then it pluggs the orifice.

Got the Explorer compressor in works like a charm. truck gets nice and cold now.. looking at the old compressor I am suprised it held to gether as long as it did.. Clutch core was melted and pulley was really wobble once the belt tension was taken off....Seems internally was okay think the bearing saved it... now just got to order the hose and do the whole system flush.
