Been getting alot of blowby on the truck (diy stage 1's inthe next week or two)so for the new intercooler i did the ccv mod. Reading some threads on other sites and talking to someone who put a banks turbo on his IDI, was wondering about the passenger side. My buddy tapped his valve cover (passenger side) and t'd it to the driver side, ran it down the exhaust and dumped into the pipe after the muffler. Anyone done this or similar. I've seen vented oil caps but don;t likethe idea of the mist in the engine compartment. Seems likea good Idea, especially on a boosted engine. Any Thoughts?
I don't recall anyone tieing the VCs together, but some guys have turned the CCV box on the VC around and run the hose, after welding a bung at an angle, into the exhaust pipe.
I'm not sure you gain any benefit by tieing both VCs together for CCV purposes.
Craig, I don't think running them together is necessary on our trucks. They are sorta tied together anyway though the internal spaces in the block. If you get enough vacuum on the CCV it will pull all the fumes off the engine. Mght even see a performance gain but I've never verified that...not on a diesel anyway. My perf gasser engines make up to an additional 30 HP with a good CCV evacuation.
i would definatly vent both sides, any boosted engine needs to evac as much as possible, no need to tie them together, just dump them, i also dont think you would want to plumb it into your exhaust either, there is alot of backpressure in that pipe and i think you would pressureize the crankcase instead of evac it.
my plan is to get another dogbox for the passenger valve cover and use an evaporative emissions motor off a gas car to suck all fumes out of the motor. the same set-up is on my buddies lightning and it works excellent, a big difference on the dyno over a stock pcv system and over an atmosphere vent as well. granted i dont have 1500 horsepower like him but it would still be beneficial
I was planning on hitting a couple of junk yards around and grabbing another ccv box and using that on the passenger side. I didn't want to run so much tube to the back ofthe truck in case over time it sags and traps oil presurizing the crankcase. right now i have the ccv piped down behindthe wheel well, but I don't like stopping and seeing the mist coming from under the truck-just looks bad. I know that it will be less when i change the injectors out. Maybe I'll play around with doingit in hard pipe to the back of the truck and just ahve the tubing to get down to the frame.
I would not go thru all the trouble of using another CCV housing on the passengerside. Just get an oil fill extention from a SD 7.3 or 6.0 (6.0 one is really long) and tap it like Kris did. Thats what I plan to do. it screws right in and you filler cap will thread right on to it. No fabing, easily reversable, and cheap.
