Sealed Beam Headlight Swap

Hello all,

I am giving my old head lights to a co-worker with a 00 F-450 XL with sealed beam headlights. Are they just a simple swap or do you need a little bit more hardware? Thanks in advance.

buhhhhhhhh...
well, the wiring is different
I think the core support might be different...

might be worthwhile to pull the grilles and compare stuff... but still, I'd take halogen capsules over sealed beams any day...

From what I've seen in the differences in mine w/ the aero headlights and one @ work w/ sealed. The grilles would have to be swapped. The headlight assemblies should mount to the core support the same, I think. The clips that hold the adjusters to the core support on the aeros should be the same as the sealed. Not for sure, though. Would have to check this. May mount in a different way.

Justin, look in your owner's manual for headlight replacement and it has the procedure for sealed beam. It is quite different.

I see, I had never really looked closly at them. So it will need a few more parts then just a direct bolt on. How much is the coversion?

It might involve a new head panel. IMO not worth the trouble or expense unless the head panel can be had at a salvage yard and it would fit a 450. I have no real idea of cost.

Oh well, I guess I should take them back then heh. I sold them to him for 10 bucks yesterday and thought they replaced easily. Its a company truck so if you gotta throw alot of money at it then its a waste. Thanks for telling me Robin I should have asked earlier.

The header panel is the same. The grille is the same. The only thing you will need is the plugs off a car or truck with bulbs instead of sealed beams.I took mine off a 1999 Explorer for my 2001 F250. The wire colors are even the same,so it's easy to splice onto the truck.

I just did this swap and everything is the same but the plugs. Do it.It looks great!

Yes,ALL the same. The header panels are all set up for either sealed beam or composite lights.Just change the plug. I got my composites off Ebay, but they are all the same setup.I'd post pictrues, but I'm not allowed.

HEY! I just did another sealed beam to composite(newer) headlight upgrade and some Superduties with square sealed beams come with the correct harness plug for composites and use a jumper to attach to the old style square sealed beam.

You don't even need to find new plugs OR splice the wiring.

All you need are the composite headlights (and 4 small retainer clips if your new headlights don't come with them)

Well his truck is a 2000, so it might just need an adaptor and some clips. I gave him everything, when I updated my lights it came with everything. Thanks Ford guy, rep rewarded!

His truck will have the correct setup. He will unplug the factory adaptor, and the nose harness will then plug right into the new composites.

Seems like only some early 99's don't have the adaptor from the factory.
