i have a 70 360 engine with a 66 352 carb. as far as i know of they are the same pars between the years but i need to know about what rpm my truck should idle at. it's a manual. i wanna get the most outta my new carb what can i do to get the pest performance?
Like John said there are no hard #'s for where you to set it. The type of cam, ignition, and overall condition of the engine play a part in where you can leave the idle without stalling. You will most likely be able to set the rpm to about 550 and be happy if your engine is generally in good condition. I know manuals are normally set a little lower then automatic transmission equiped engines. The auto's need a little more RPM to overcome the normal drag of driving the torque convertor. I have my 460 with a C6 set to 620-640 rpm but that is because I like the loppy idle my cam makes. I have to admit though I sometimes wonder if the truck is going stall coming to stop light at times though. So far it hasn't, knock on wood.
red,
Hook up your vacuum gauge, and where the highest amount of vacuum exists, that's the perfect rpm for your idle. Make sure in advance, that you have everything set correctly and in proper operating condition. In my opinion, the "vacuum gauge" is a great "tale-telling" tool.
