EGR System

Install a coolant bypass filter to help prevent the oil cooler from becoming plugged which will cause the egr cooler to fail.
I know a lot of people like to delete the egr cooler; are there fines associated with deleting it if you're caught? Will it have an effect on passing emissions? Is the oil cooler really that necessary? Is there a way to set the oil cooler up as a bypass just like the coolant bypass filter set up (if that sounds silly it's because I'm not a mechanic but I had to ask).

Well here if your above a certain weight your exempt from emissions, but it depends on how you have to be tested when you go thru emissions. If it's a simple OBD-II testing then more then likely you'll be fine or it's easy to have the computer flashed in such a way that you'll pass it if you get it done within a mileage limit or maybe a custom tune for emissions from Matt might help it. You'll probably have to have a custom tune if you have idle emissions testing(regular and high idle). As to the fines, I'm sure there are fines, as to what they are you'll probably have to go to your state's website to find that info out or do a search for it.

Unfortunatly here in Las Vegas they increased the minimum weight on diesels so we have to go through emissions. When I do the emissions this year I will ask the tech exactly what kind of test they run to see if it is a simple test or idle emsission test.

They have upped the limit here several times, luckily I'm still exempt, but it is just the simple OBD-II testing and that really is a joke until the computers are more sophisticated to handle trickery tuning. Back home in Plano, they were a little better about the emissions and by better I mean what is needed if you are truly concerned about testing for emissions violations rather then just trying to get people's money. The only bad thing is that it took about an 30-40 min to do the testing not to mention the wait you had to go thru to get to it.

Beck Arnley (WAY BETTER STUFF!) grease-able ball joints when OEM wears at between 50k and 100k. MOOG use to be the stuff, but they have a new quality initiative, and it's got more to do with the cost/quality directive more so that just QUALITY regardless of cost.

Thanks for all the feedback - it was fun, but very tiring. I have an excel spreadsheet with all the information in it that I am willing to e-mail anyone that is interested - just send me a PM.

Ozx1 - where did you hear about the Beck Arnley ball joints and do you have personal experience w/ them? I am very interested, but I am taking a bit of a break on internet searches right now ...............
