Look at heads, in the center between exhaust ports. Should have a Cxxx that would determine the head year(and what they actually are).

Date code on the block behind the oil filter adapter will tell the exact year the block was cast. The head date code is inside the valve cover. And 2 bbl & 4bbl---no difference in the heads. That sounded like sales hype to get you to cough up more cash.

Actually block date code is below the oil filter adapter not behind. Head date code is between the center 2 valve springs under the VC's. Just to clear that a bit as it sounded like the head date code was in the valve covers!! LOL

You can also check the stroke easy enough to verify 360 vs 390. Other than that if she runs good enjoy the truck.

Ok this is what i found,The number on the heads are 3M11 and 4A16 and the block number below the oil filter adaptor is 4M82.So what does this say?And does the head have the same number?

Heads would be December 11 1973 (3M11) and January 16 1974 (4A16) If the block is a 70's casting then it's a year later casting December 1974, the "82" doesn't jive for the day of the month, maybe it should be "22" ?

The heads 3M11 is 73/Dec/11th and 4A16 is 74/Jan/16th. Providing the block is a D3 block it has a 74/Dec/?? date code. That 82 is not correct. The last one or two numbers is the day of the month it was cast. I'd say the heads are possibly original to each other being a little over a month apart. The block is a year off tho. So either the block or heads are original. You'd have to find the build date of your truck to see which is closer to the date codes you have. Typical time frames are 30-90 days apart for engine date codes from the build date of the truck.
