It's your truck do as you please. It's a lot easier to do what I'm saying than you think. BTW, the pump is the part that the Torque converter slides into and engages.
yeah its not that hard to stop it ahead of time... but if I dont catch it in time and get some air im not going to have a melt down :lol
next time I do the tranny flush ill be trying to stop it before its totally empty to lenghten the life of my tranny as much as possible, but for me... when my engine dies i want to do a diesel conversion (drop a cummins in) and when that happends the 4r100 wont last long anyway
Yes, no body in their right mind installs a Torque Converter without filling it first, that's where the pump gets it's prime from...within seconds.
You don't seem to understand how a trans works.
The pump sends fluid to the torque converter. It DOES NOT get it's prime from the converter. It sucks fluid from the pan, not the torque converter.
You've obviously never been to a transmission plant. I've spent a lot of time in transmission plants over the last 19 years. When the torque converter is installed the transmission is oriented with the bellhousing up. The opening on the torque converter is pointing down. If the torque converter were full the fluid would run out all over the transmission. That doesn't happen because the torque converter is not filled before installation. Ford builds millions of transmissions like this every year.
Kenny has a good point. If you can write a better how-to article then by all means please do. As for me, I'll stick with Marks write up. I have yet to see a better one.
Since we've gotten sidetracked, is there any progress on the OP's tranny?
Hey Guys, Not taking sides here but, A tranny is a Hydraulic Pump. You NEVER NEVER NEVER let a pump run without FULL fluid flow. Running any pump with any AIR in it is a gamble with catastrophy! I have a Hydraulics cert and used to work on wet and dry clutches every day. I do not care what your opinion is on the matter. Running until you see bubbles is just plain wrong. Dad used to drink and drive and momma smoked while pregnant.... It was just the way it was done..... Don't mean its right... IMHO
I have personally witnessed a T/C tear itself apart after being installed empty.
Like I said before...
im just trying to learn more about this stuff, so can you explain it instead of telling me to do it to my truck and watch it gernade itself?
as for the 2nd post there "momma smokes while pregnent and such - does mean its right" I agree 100%
In this case however I have done it that way with my tranny like 4 times + never had a problem - maybe im just lucky, but theres MANY MANY others that have done it that way too...
now i will say its different when the parts are brand spanking new cause they havent even seen fluid yet - but to run them out of fluid is differerent then running them bone dry - in my opinion.
What would run longer an engine that just had all the oil drained out of it or an engine that was started bone dry?
Thats the only point i am making.
Maybe it hurts stuff maybe it dont, my experience has been it does not -

but to be "SAFE" yes, dont let it run dry
kenny
When I decide to give it a try I'll document what I do and post my version with pics. Trans fluid does a couple thing for you, the main ones I'm concerned about are lubrication and cooling. Less fluid = less of both of those. You can run your trans empty and likely not do much if any damage, just like you can run your engine without oil and likely do little if any damage. If you had an option that meant you didn't have to run it dry wouldn't you do it??? I sure as hell would. Since you're using a friend already have him check the fluid level with the dipstick as it runs and when he sees there is no fluid on the stick shut it down and top it off with new, then start over. Or, just do what you've been doing all along, you'll probably never have a problem, but what if you...........
Just an update, flushed the tranny, didn't really look too awful bad, I've seen alot worse. But I was able to limp it to the tranny shop to replace it. I figured for what I'll be doing to that truck its worth the extra $$$ up front to get a new tranny with a warranty.
$3300 gets me a Jasper unit installed, with a larger cooler, and a tranny temp gauge. I'm also going to wait until this summer and put some 4.56's in it and a L/S unit in too. I don't run it at highway speeds for long between farms, and it sees alot of pulling and plowing, so the lower gear should help tremendously.

sounds good - just make sure you have not heard too much bad about jasper - i heard all good about bts - but i never really looked for trannies
My decision to Jasper was more out of the fact that Wednesday I can have it in the truck and back running again. I haven't heard too many bad things about them.
