So now I'm rethinking the whole mercon v in my transmission. Is mercon v absolutly nessisary.
I went to buy mercon v at advance and the guy behind the counter (guy I know) asked what I was using it in. I said my diesel and he said that mercon 3 will work fine. He said when he swapped the fluid in his 2000 v10 that he was told by the transmission shop to use mercon 3 but ford reccomends using mercon v. But ford tells you to put mercon v into EVERY transmission.
Is mercon v required for the 4r100.
I know all the big diesel trans shops reccomend the mercon v but will mercon3 work.
Every post that Mark K has replied to on this subject has been Mercon V.
He may correct me and that is fine......he knows
Was mercon v around back in 99-03 when these transmissions were in their production heyday behind the 7.3 engine. What fluid actually came "stock" in these transmissions.
There was never a Mercon 3, only Mercon. There was Dexron III/Mercon. Ford had Mercon change the formula of Mercon-V so we can use it in our trans. I don't think they make Mercon now, only Mercon-V.

Bugger, yup.
its dextron3 not mercon.
what about using the mercon/dextron3 fluid in our transmissions. Id really like to spend 20 dollars for a case of oil vs walmart supertec at $45 and napa brand for 60+
My OA came back that I have a lot of DIRT in my fluid, and that I need to change it IMMEDIATLY. I was thinking about removing the pan and cleaning out the sludge, and then putting it back together, and doing the quick flush. Then drive it some, and then do it all over again but replace the filter, add my 6liter cooler, and an external filter also. I think I can get royal purple fluid for under $5 a quart, but I didnt get a reply back a while ago wether or not RP fluid is ok to use. The bottle says it is mercon v compatible/rated but I didnt get any concensus on if it was not reccomended.

As long as it says Mercon compatible on the bottle, it is good to use in our trans. How can you get a lot of DIRT in the trans???

No idea how it was so "dirty" I could have gotten a contaminated sample, but I made sure to clean and use brake clean to wash around the drain plug. Maybe some sludge come out into the sample jar when I let loose the plug.
Direct quate off my Schaeffer OA
" silicon (dirt, sand) high: see reverse side of form. iron: gears, discs, housings, bearings, pumps, pto. oil should be changed, resample to establish trends "
Granted, my truck has over 230k on it, and im sure it is the original fluid, it sure looks used up to me, its near black and smoky looking. Gotta get it changed soon.
I may flush it (after dropping the pan and cleaning the sludge out) with merc/dex3 fluid, and then go get some Royal Purple fluid. My buddy at advance said he can give me a deal on 2 cases, somewhere around $4 a quart.
Sounds like a good plan to me. I would get another OA done on the fluid after you drain the cheap fluid to put the RP in. Just sounds strange to have dirt/sand in the trans.
Look, even at $4 a quart it takes 20 quarts to completely flush the tranny, torque converter, etc. That's $80. Go to an oil change place and have them flush it for $100. For $20 more then you can purchase the fluid they will hook it up to a machine that runs 20 new quarts in and 20 old quarts out to a recapture tank. No mess, no getting rid of the old fluid, etc. Just my 2 cents worth. Its all Merc V now, reformulated like Miller said to meet the OEM specs for the 4R100

Thanks Rick, brain fart on my end!!
When I was having some tranny issues and talked to Brian at BTS he told me after I replaced my bad seal I could do a flush and fill and use dextron 3 (because it was cheap)without any ill effects. I only have 20k with the dextron 3 but haven't experienced any problems yet.
You can still buy Dex III/Merc, but like Mark K told to me: "Ford and GM no longer license Dexron III/MERCON. Nobody is watching what's in them. MERCON V is licensed by Ford so there is some monitoring the fluid."
That's good enough for me!
Merc V or a syn based equivalent is the only thing that will go into my trans.

See, the problem I have with this is that for the 100$ they will not pull the pan and wipe the crud off the bottom or replace the filter. If all you do is flush it, then the crud in the pan will just dissolve in the new fluid and now your contaminated again, or like most transmissions with high miles.. Fail. And doubtful they will even use mercon v.
I understand what your getting at, but not something I'm likely to do. I'd rather do it myself and put in a quality fluid and deal with disposing the oil.
