Another post I was reading reminded me of this event and I thought I'd share for everyone's benefit.
A few years ago I was carrying a bundle of 5 pieces of baseboard about 16' long and I put them from the top of the tailgate up over the cab of the truck and I strapped them down from one side of the bed, once around the wood, and then down to the other side of the bed. I went on down the road and I heard a snap, boom and my wood disappeared. I was sure I was going to see devastation behind me. I pulled over and couldn't see it anywhere. The cars behind me just kept going and I sat there thoroughly confused. When I got out I looked in the bed of the truck and there was my trim, laying neatly, still bundled in two halves. My tie down was laying in the bed with the slack end frayed. I looked around and couldn't find the missing piece anywhere until I looked under the truck and saw it wrapped tightly around the drive shaft. The tail of the strap had fallen down between the bed and caught around the shaft and pulled the trim down like you'd snap a twig against a rock.
The moral of the story is " Don't do what I did" and "Never leave the loose end of your tie downs loose."
A friend did this with his BRAND NEW truck. He had a wheel barrow in the bed and he tied it down with a ratchet strap. The loose end went between the bed and the cab and caught the driveshaft and pulled the 2 sides of the bed together

one time we had a load of 12' 2x12's in the bed of our mason dump and we had them resting on the tailgate. as we were going down the road i looked out the passenger side mirror to see the 2x12 go flying out of the bed and nearly missed two guys riding a bike.

Did he strap it at the middle or the front of the bed? That's one strong strap.
