Tie down brackets

The other day I was moving a washing machine and I attached a ratcheting tie down strap around the machine to the brackets on either side. I started to tighten the strap and noticed that the bed, where the brackets are attached was starting to "flex" and I heard a slight crackling noise (like the paint cracking from flexing). Well, this got me to thinking, how much stress can those factory tie down brackets hold? If you look at them, they really don't seem that substantial. I tried to look around in the manual for some info but didn't come accross anything. I'm afraid to really use them now until I find out their specs, I don't want to rip them out of the bed.

You were probably putting alot more force on the tiedowns than you thought if you were using a ratchet type strap. I've taken mine off to install a bed liner (on a 2002) and the screws do go thru another layer of sheetmetal on the back side, not sure how they are mounted on the 04's.

I've had problems years ago with ratcheting tie downs also. They are VERY deceiving as to how tight they are. I've broken spot welds on tie downs in my trailer after tightening them "enough"....... Since then, I've realized that I must take it easy when cranking on them.

The load they are tested to depends on which direction the force is being applied. In the worst case, the straps should not show more than 2mm of deformation in the box side wall when a 190 lb load is applied up (perpendicular to the bed floor). Also, a cracking sound could happen at any load; The paint in the joint of the reinforcement behind the tiedown bracket may be cracking, etc. Listen to chains, ratchet straps can be deceiving. Just snug them up and don't worry...it's tough and it's under warranty A good test to see if they are too tight: If the washing machine had dents where the straps were, you cranked it too much
