SO I have the 5.4 2V windsor had to replace the timing chain due to the tick of it being loose. Sure enough when I got to the timing chains one of the guides was broken and the others were severely worn. Changed them out and do no think I did but just making for sure I did not use the cam holders but I did make sure the the marks were all lined up. When back together fires right up immediately almost better that before. Has a loppy mis to it though now and if I let it run at Idle it has it will eventually sell a light gassy smell at the tail pipe. When I rev it up it sounds better and miss seems to go away but not sure if its that or just cant tell it. When you put it in gear and try to drive it gets crazy bad on the idle and struggles to run. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. By not pay close enough attention could one of the cams be 360 degrees out of wack even though all of the marks are lined up. are the marks dummy proof as long as #1 cylinder is at top ted center and the cams are matched with crank with the marks provided with chain and sprockets. Any thing helps at this point
Oh S*(@#$T.
Noticing this is post #1, and judging from some of the questions will give Jesus Christ himself a heart attack.
First off ... is it a misspelling or what do you mean by "it will eventually sell a light gassy smell ..."?
And, If you get a cam 360º out of whack - its is in the same damn spot it was originally - so that is not going to hurt a damn thing. I'm not even sure you could do that without removing the CAM itself - which wasn't mentioned.
Basically: If you did NOT move the crank or cams from shutdown until alignment of the colored chain links with chain marks on phasers / crank sprocket, you probably are OK on that score. But the ONLY way you can check it now is with some decent scanner equipment and judging from other symptoms - ie: backfiring or running really bad.
Did the passenger side spin when took the chain off? I believe the drivers side stays put. The passenger side would of spun counterclockwise. so that side might be out 180, if you didn't hold hit. I use visegrips , but thats me tho.
Id check your connections at the cops. sometimes those connectors are a pain.
I don't know for sure - but I would be willing to bet that if one side was 180 degrees out, you would have valve contact that would have torn lots of stuff up already.
All my timing marks line up i have just a bit of slack in driver side chain, when i rotate crank the slack gets taken out for 1/2 a turn and is back i left all roller followers in when timing any info? My first time working on the 5.4
I just wanted to dowble check with you before putting the front cover back on...the slack i have on the driver side is on the non tensioner side of the chain is that ok?
The slack from the driver side chain is there but if i put pressure from a breaker bar it goes away soon as i let off the slack stays did i do something wrong? Sorry for all the question i am still learning
