Funny, I just rode in my buddies F series V10 today! Truck is a 99 or 2000, and has been a farm truck its whole life. 86xxx HARD miles, and been towing weight its whole life. Been real good to them, and it has a whole lot of grunt. Its a single cab, and it will haul some serious tail.

The biggest driveability difference has been pointed out - the 460 is an older-style pushrod engine, developing low-end torque but lacking some in the top-end in stock form. The V-10 is an overhead cam engine, which automatically means it likes high rpms. Just a little different powerband, that's all.

The V-10 makes more power and gets better gas mileage than the 460. Hands down. Been proven.

However, it will be more expensive to mess with since it's newer.

I like your swap idea and will be interested in seeing it, no matter what your decision is. Good Luck!

well thanks for the input! lots of help. I think i may have to find a v10 truck and drive it just to kind of compare. right now it's between low-end grunt (460) and fuel mileage/efficiency (v10)

early 2V V10s are pretty cheap, but they are also pretty weak wehn compared to a 5.4DOHC from a navigator. Go for the 3V V10 362hp and 455lbs ft o' torque. More expensive as they are 05 and up, but worth it

Having had two 460s, a '97 and a '79 (still have the '79) and two V10s, an '05 and an '08, I'll chime in.

The original poster wants to be able to work on the truck himself. The 460 gets the nod. If you're considering a late 80's and up truck, there is a computer to deal with as well, so take that into consideration. As far as the "rats nest" comment. My '79 has so many vacuum hoses on it, that if you're not careful you'll loose track of them and have quite a mess.

Aftermarket parts are there for the 460, and they can be built to make power easy.

The V10 can be intimidating. The spark plugs seem harder to change, but they're not. Getting to things like the water pump or A/C compressor can be a challenge though.

Not much in the aftermarket for V10s, especially 3 valve motors.

To go from a big block V8, or a diesel for that matter, to a V10 can be dissapointing at first for some. The main reason is that the V10 needs to be revved to make full use of it. This is not flogging it or abusing it since the motor was built to rev up to 6k rpms.
The 460 was limited to 4500 or so and the 7.3s to 3500 or so, if I recall correctly. There is a learning curve to using a V10 correctly.

The '05 and up V10s, are powerhouses right out of the box. Everyone should drive one if they get the chance.

I think the original poster would be happiest with a 460 in this circumstance.

well if you go v10 just get one built after 2004, as the older models like to spit out spark plugs, only 3 threads in the head will do that, what ford was thinking i haven't a clue. crap i was thinking of dumping a 460 in my 01 f250sd, ringht now i have a 5.4 but my supervisorshas a v10 he has had to replace 6 plugs and 7 coils so far. and if you do get a pre 04' go to modularracing.com for some better heads, with 8 threads and produce more Hp and torque. iknow for the 5.4 they get 40 more horse ad 70 foot pounds but are 2800 dollars i believe that also includes their custom cam-shaft.
