Finally got into my dash today. Weather has been just a little to cold to mess with it til today. Turns out the little white piece is broken. Is this a dealer item only and would they have it in stock?
You can get at it from underneath. I think just 1 screw holds it on. Just take it apart, take the black threaded adjuster out, and super glue the white piece back together. No real force on it, I glued mine years ago, still good. If I recall, strictly a dealer item. I broke mine taking out the cluster,(for the first time), to change cluster bulbs. I didn't know about the cable till I broke the adjuster
Good Luck...
My white thumbwheel was broken...cause of my shifter needle to be out of place and awkward shifting into park and reverse (as mentioned in another post, when I was parallel parking, I probably shifted into reverse or drive too quickly...and that started all my problems).
I was hesitant to believe the darn wheel could cause the shifter needle to be off and shifting into park and reverse to be so awkward feeling. However, it was and through the advice of this forum, I located the thumbwheel, saw that it was broken and used a plastic tie to get the thumbwheel back in place. Only concern I have now is that the tie doesn't rub against the nylon-type cable. I'm going to apply some super glue or epoxy to make sure the plastic tie doesn't rub against the cable.
And, the more I read the forum, the more I find I have the exact same problems...next one I may takle is my digital odometer...goes on and off and there's a good thread on how to fix that.
You'll find that most of us on this forum share alot of the same problems. '97-'03 F150s all seem to have similar little quirks that most of us have experienced and can help the ones who's truck is acting up. Thanks for joining us on FTE, and don't hesitate to share any problems or concerns relating to your F150(s)!
