On my 1999 Ranger the shift indicator is off. When it's in park, the needle is on reverse, when in reverse, the needle is in neutral, when in neutral, the needle is in drive.. so on..
I hear there is an adjustment, but how do I get to it and where is it located?
I don't recall readin about anyone doing it before, but here's what the '99 Ford Manual says about the Ranger:
Cable/Bracket Adjustment —Shift Indicator Cable
1. Remove the upper instrument panel steering column cover (04459); refer to Section 501-12.
2. Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position by first rotating the gearshift leverclockwise until it bottoms out (first gear), then rotate two detents counterclockwise to the (D) position.
3. Hang the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.
4. Center the pointer in the middle of the (D) position by rotating the thumbwheel located on the bottom of the steering column to adjust the pointer.
5. Remove the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.
6. Carefully move the gearshift lever from detent and compare with the transmission settings.
7. Readjust if necessary.
8. Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover; refer to Section 501-12.
Rockledge, this excerpt from the Ford manual is wrong for my '99 Ranger. I removed both halves of the column cover and no thumbscrew was visible anywhere. Mine is a '99 2x4, 3.0 liter, x-cab, automatic of course. On a cold day in my garage I wasted 1 1/2 hours and ended up just putting it back together. Another internet forum I was on suggests the thumbscrew is farther down the column and involves removing the lower panel and steel bolster behind it, but I wasn't ready for that job today.
You might want to just look at the bottom of the columb where the shift cable bracket is mounted. Often the shift indicator is off because the screws that mount that bracket are loose. If it isnt loose then more than likely the adjuster bracket where the thumbwheel mounts is broken. You woud have to replace the shift indicator if that is the case because Ford doesnt sell the bracket separately. You could alternatively remove the bracket and just swap with the one from the new indicator assembly.
I checked the cable bracket when I was lying with my head on the brake pedal earlier. it seems to be solid. I made the adjustment down at the tranny. It used up all the adjustment there was and still left P a little off but all the others are close enough. One warm day I'll do it right. The only picture found on the web was on an Explorer forum and it shows behind the steel bolster below the column.
