shifter needle

I was on my way to work today, and when I got into town I stopped at the gas station. When I got back into my truck I put it in drive and hit the gas, nothing, I was in neutral. The dang needle was all of a sudden off.

I tried putting it in first to see if it would bump the needle back to where it should be, nothing, it's still off. When it is in park the needle is about half way beween park and reverse.

I've never had the guages taken apart before
How does that needle work? Is it a cable that needs some slack taken out if it?

I also have a 97 F150 and have had to remove the "PRNDL" in order to replace instrument cluster bulbs. It is cable driven and if I remember correctly there is an adjuster for the cable on it.

There's a thumbscrew that adjusts the pointer on the column end of the cable. If you have 14-inch fingers with 5 knuckles you can reach it pretty easily without removing anything.

Ironic, My 98 did exactly the same thing last month. You described it to a T. With the new info from here I believe I will have to jump in there and repair it. Not sure why it jumped so am expecting something broken. But most definitely will take a cable luber after that cable.

hey guys i found a tech article on another site that explained how to fix this problem..

here's the pic from the article... i haven't done it yet, so don't blame me if it's wrong

anyways you take off the trim around the stearing colum. look at the right side of the steering colum and you'll see that white piece of plastic with the black wheel attached. Just turn the wheel to adjust the shift indicator

You don't really need to take any trim off. If you lay on the floor you can look right up at it.

From my experience from work, most of the time you just have to replace the white plastic piece holding the thumbscrew. It normally just breaks off, its alot easier to replace the little white piece, than to pull the cluster and replace the whole thing.
Lay under the dash, you should be able to see it. Unbolt the plastic piece from the new part and replace the broken piece with it.

If it's still working fine, moves back and forth that is, but is a little off, it shouldn't be broken should it?

Mine moves back and forth just fine, it's just off a little.

Oh, if it still moves good, just that it isnt in the right place, then you probably have to just adjust it.

I can get to mine without taking anything off. I busted the white plastic where the wheel sits the first time I did cluster bulbs. I took it off, superglued it(just the cheap stuff), has lasted many years. No real pressure on it, just holds the little wheel, very easy to break though..If I recall it's easiest to work on and get the little cable back on if you do it with the gear selector in Low... Don't let it roll away though!!!!!!
