429 says "460"

i just noticed stamped on the front of the block the numbers 460
this engine was said to be a 429
i got it out of a 69 montego which was way totaled. for $800
he had the reciepts for the parts used but not the work "he lost them"
the engine is new.
im beginning to wonder if i did get such a great deal tho.
ive had a constant hesitation problem.. and now the motor which was said to be a 429 has 460 stamped on the block on the drivers side front above the oil pan
does this mean anything or are these numbers something else?
are the blocks interchangeable... i dont see how
thanks

it could be a "460 block" with a 429 crank because the only difference in the two engines are the pistons and the crankshaft, so its hard to tell from the outside for sure, you could try the old dowel trick and pull a plus and stick it down in the cylinder and turn the motor over until the piston hits the bottom of its stroke and mark the dowel. if the end of the dowel measures aorund 3.5 inches, its a 429, if its close to 4, its a 460

i have a 429 in my bronco and a 460 in the bed of my pickup....they both say 460 on the front...that's cuz the blocks are identical....i am not sure the dowel thing will work to find out for sure, since there is not much stroke difference...the surefire way to tell is to look at the crankshaft....one of the throws will have a 4U or 4UA if it is a 429...anything else, then it's a 460

one of the only other differences in the blocks are the deck heights. from the older blocks use the shorter deck height for the higher compression (1968-71). then in 1972 and again in the years to follow they increased the deck height to lower the compression. C.J. ....

Please list your source. My info shows no such difference in deck heights. Besides, during some of those years both 429/460 were produced. So how would the deck heighth distinguish between the two if, in fact, it was different??

Let me help. Per the first Ford Off Highway Parts manual, the first SVO catalog, and the latest edition of the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog: Deck Height- 68-70...10.300 70 1/2..10.310 72-96....10.322 These specs cover 429-460 base engines. The 429 CJ,SCJ, and BOSS were 10.300...........

Found it!! Thanx. Typical Ford goofiness. Instead of dishing the piston 1/100th of an inch(and then 22/100ths) they change blocks!!! Still wouldn't be able to tell the diff between 429/460 though by deck height.
