429 or 460

I recently sold my 61 unibody which I was told from the day i bought it that it had a 429 cobra jet in to my manager at work. When he got it home he looked at the block and told me the next day that it was really a 460. It has 460 stamped right on the bloch on the front of the motor on the drivers side. The heads on the motor i believe are cobra jet heads as they have dove-c right on the head. I don't know what to tell him he doesn't seem like he is mad about it. It's not like i knew it wasn't a 429 I just never doubted it was.

The 429 and 460 block are identical. The crank is the difference. So the 460 means nothing.

I am sure you were told it was a 429cj, just like every big block that has been transplanted into anything I have ever seen was a 429cj, infact I think I have seen more cobrajet 429s in pickups than I ever seen in a mustang or torino.
Bear is correct the 429/460 blocks are the same although the SCJ blocks would have 4 bolt mains, and the Boss 9 blocks were setup different for the oiling those are exceptions, but the Dove-c heads do not make a cj.

Actually the the 429CJ can be a 4 bolt block, D0VE-A. The correct heads for the CJ/SCJ is a D0OE-R casting, as per Ford's information. I believe the D0VE heads were used on the 429 Thunderjet and the Police Interceptor engines and some 460's. Most of the D0VE heads I have seen have been on the 460's that I have found.
