429/460

I just picked up a 76 F250 4x4 with what the PO said was a 429, he thought it was a 79 429 car engine, sense Ford did not make a 429 car engine after 73, I'm thinking 460. What is the stroke for these engines or where is the ID numbers on the engine so I can decode what it is?

stroke is 429 = 3.59" 460 = 3.85"

Block casting number is right above the starter. BUT 429 and 460 use the same block. IF it's a D9TE-AB casting then it is NOT a 429 car motor (the 429 Lima truck engines did use that block though)

If it is easy to remove the oil pan, I would check the casting number on the crank. You would know for sure what stroke it has.

CID Year Crank Casting Number
429 '68-'78 :4U, 4UA
460 '68-'78 :2Y, 2YA, 2YAB, 2YABC
460 '79-up :3Y

Also be aware there were two different pilot diameters for torque converter in the early years. This is something to verify now. You don't want to get the build done and find out your new combination fits loosely,or not at all.

That info is not needed for id of the engine though (no 429s in light duty trucks at all, and no 460s in 4x4s until the 80s)

But it is a nice swap.

Yes, it is not infro need for the ID, but as 71cc said something about pilot diameters, I thought that I would though out there that the engine is allready in a running truck and I was not building a engine for a fresh swap. I have rebuilt one 385 engine before, I have a 460 in a 80 Bronco, but I spent most of my time on FE engines, so the 385 is pretty much a unknown to me.

I had the pan out this week end, to only mark that I could find was a "3", no "Y" on it. Did not get the stroke checked.
