460 to 429
With that here I go, Can I take a 97 f350 460ci FI engine (which is now toast) and swap with a 1970 429 long block and bolt everything else from the 460 FI engine on it (ie. intake manifold, water pump etc..) and put it back in on a E40D/4R100 transmission with a 4WD?
the EFI intake won't bolt to the 429 heads. they have different port layout so you would have to use the efi heads on the 429 for it to work. same with the exhaust manifolds.
the other problem is that the 429 is internally balanced and the efi 460 is externally balanced so you would have to use the flexplate from the 429 or get the efi 460 flexplate neutrally balanced to work on the 429. the transmission should bolt to the 429 as they have the same bellhousing, not 100% sure on the 429 flexplate but it should bolt to the converter no problem.
all othe components should swap over no problem. the only thing is that the front balancers might be different so your pulleys might not be the same. some people say that the balancers are all neutral balanced so you can swap them between externally and internally balanced engines, but i am not 100% sure if this is true or not.
should be a fairly straightforward swap, just a few small things to look out for.
