Suddenly my 4x4 doesn't engage except in 4 low and really reving the engine. transfer case seems fine, fluid ok, I can feel it engage, manual hubs seem fine... friend thinks it might be a vacuum issue? Any thoughts? PS-- 322,xxx and runs like a champ!
Welcome to FTE the guys here will be able to help you. I think we are gonna need more info. If you have manual hubs and Im assuming a manual transfer case then there is no vacuum to cause problems. I dunno if there was a "push button" transfer case offered on these trucks. Was the truck auto hubs that were converted to manual? Im gonna watch this thread and learn as well.
There aren't any vacuum controls on your truck so that is out of the question. How do you know its not engaging in 4hi? Its all mechanical in the T-case so if its not working either the shift fork is bad or you have plantetary or other major issues.
Yes it is a manual shift with replacement manual lockout hubs before I got her... girlfriend was watching me slip around in the driveway & the front wasn't spinning... Don't hear anything grinding... maybe the hubs went bad?
More than likely the plastic pads on the shift fork have worn out and the shift collar is not going into the right spot. Unless you comfortable ripping the T-case apart you need to find a shop who will do it for you.
Thanks much-- guess I'll play with it a bit... Any way to check do you think without pulling it apart? I usually get way into a project only to find it was an easy fix to begin with!
Do a check, Truck not running, transfer case in 2 wheel hi, lock hubs in, get under truck an see if you can turn the front drive shaft. If you can a hub is not engauging. For the transfer case unlock the hubs, case in 4 hi. Again try the front driveshaft, no turn the case is working. Able to turn case is not engauging. By turning I mean being able to rotate compleatly around. Hope this helps. Tom
