Electronic Transfer Case Problems

I have a 97 F-150 with electronic 4x4. 4x4 works fine when engaged and i have no issued if the 4x4 is engaged when stopped. When I try to engage 4 wheel drive while moving i get a grinding noise and sometimes a clunk before 4 wheel drive engages. Any suggestions?

sounds like the hubs to me. mine does that every now and then. i don't know a whole lot about the newer electronic 4x4 system being as i recently bought my first truck with one, however i do know that the hubs are engaged by a vacume line. the only thing i can think of would be a possible leak of some kind. just big enough to prevent the suction needed to engage them while moving. i might be wrong, but thats where i would look.

My understanding is - The IWE hub engages when the vacuum is removed from the system and disengages when vacuum is applied. With the vehicle in 2WD and the key in the off position, the hubs are engaged. With the key in the on (engine running or not), the hubs are disengaged.
