1997 Mazda B4000 4X4 problem

Hi all, I seem to be having a problem engaging 4 wheel drive in my truck. This is a used truck with 90K mile on it. After driving for a while, the 4 wheel drive will not engage (get the flashing lights on the dash). If I let the truck sit for a bit (1 hour +), will engage with no problems. It's tempermental, and am wondering if there was any issues with this particular years 4 wheel drive. Also wondering what checks are made when attempting to engage 4 wheel drive?

After you read that, use the search feature here. Typing in different key words will return slightly different results.
Maybe that the electrical plug to the shift motor needs cleaning, maybe more.
