i have a 302. can anyone give me a run down of what work is usually done in an engine rebuild? any price ranges? and if it is better to pay to have an engine rebuilt or buy a rebuilt engine and swap? these may seem like dumb questions but i am young and fresh in the mechanic scene. and if you can please be real specific in your answer
You might want to consider a used engine from a junkyard or a junker in someones yard. Ford built millions of 302's and they are usually pretty easy to find. An acquaintenance got one with a 15 day replacement warranty for around $350 and it was in excellent condition.
Depends what you want to do with the truck also. Do you want low end idle torque or tire spinning rpm's. If its low end torque rock crawler maybe look at a 351 if you just want a daily driver with some fun then stick with the 302. This will also change what you need to do to the engine. So I guess you need to decide that also.

The use of the engine will also have something to do with what suspension and/or gearing mods you make too ...
I'm am rebuilding my 302 for my 85 F150 machine work and a master rebuild kit all for $875.00 mine is FI I also got a injector rebuild kit for $25.00 off ebay.
It all depends if you are just going to refresh the engine, rebuild it, or rod it. You can do a simple ring/hone/bearing/gaskets fairly cheap (less than $400 easy) that might last a couple of years and help you learn your subject. You should have the valves ground and new seals installed while you are at it (roughly $200 for the set).
My suggestion is to first purchase an old HP Books title called "how to rebuild your small block ford". If you have never been in an engine this can walk you through the whole project. I read it at 14 years old, twice, then my Dad quized me on it before we started to rebuild my first engine. He definitly didn't need any help but it was a good start for a newbie!
Full on rebuild with heads...$1200 for a good setup, you can have it done cheaper (695 - 895 for a mass remanufactured engine) but they use the cheapest parts available. It will get you at least 50,000 miles though.
Buy the book then after your reading, make your decision.
