engine rebuild

can anyone give me a run down of what work is usually done in an engine rebuild? any price ranges? and if it is better to pay to have an engine rebuilt or buy a rebuilt engine and swap? these may seem like dumb questions but i am young and fresh in the mechanic scene.

If you have a 302, the best thing you can do is go buy the book "How to rebuild your small block Ford". It will take you step by step through the rebuild process, and one of these books is what led me through my first rebuild years ago.

I had a '77 with a 351m that I had rebuilt for about $900 and seemed to be just fine. Built to bone stock so no major upgrade expenses. It only took the machine shop a few days to get it done and I was happy with it.

I now have a '86 with a 300 that I am needing to get rebuilt. Going with a local machine shop (the other was 90 miles away) and will run me around $1500ish.
