I have a 1991 f-150 with a 302, and i have been having problems starting it in the cold, the engine will crank over just fine, but will never fire. I had the same problems last year, and took it to a dealer, they gave me a laudery list of stuff that they thought was wrong, and price tag to go with it, so I just hauled it home. So I figured there would be no time like the present to start working on it myself. It starts in summer just fine, just when it gets cold, do i start to have problems. Well this rookie is just looking for some guidence and a place to start from. Thanks for your time.
The first thing you should do is buy a service manual for the truck, they contain a wealth of info and pics.. well worth the $$.
With this type issue you may have a sensor problem but it could also be something more basic like bad plug wires or a grounding issue. You can test all these components with basic tool and a multimeter, and the manual wil show proceedures for this.
If the check engine light has ever been on it's a good idea to have a look at the stored codes, they won't always precisely point to a problem but will narrow down the list of things that need to be looked at. www.fordfuelinjection.com has a simple proceedure you can use to pull codes without a code reader.
