Need Help with A4LD

Hello everyone,

I have a 94 Aerostar with a A4LD on a 4.0L. I found a tranny out of a 94 Explorer 4X4 without the rear case, can I bolt the tail section of my tranny onto the 4X4 tranny and use it in my 2 wd?
thanks,
Dean

The output shaft of the 4wd transmission is much shorter than the 2wd version, as it splines into the drive gear of the transfer case. You need to at least also transplant the output shaft, and whatever else might be in the 2wd tranny's tail shaft housing.

Not sure about Explorer, but as I remember explorer has on demand AWD, aero has all time AWD. well, should work, but there is a reason to swap front x-member and convert aero to awd. I see front x-members for aeros on junkyards for $100-400...

I believe you can, that's just like asking if you can take a tranny off of a 2wd aero and use it in the 4wd, really all that's diff. is that output shaft (atleast w aeros.) some on here say that ranger/explorer/aero are the same? my neighbor has an explorer, but the motor is a 4.2l? iono check the bell housing bolt patterns, the bell housing may be diff. but the body could be the same, ummmmmmmmm.... oh yeah check the bolt pattern of the output shaft

Never sow 4.2 Explorer/Ranger. There are 4.0 and 5.0 engines in Explorer, but 2.3 and 3.0 fit Explorer.
4.2-4.3 V6 are in F150, E150....

Never heard of the Ford 4.2L in an Explorer or Ranger, 90-96 4.0L OHV, 97-00 4.0l OHC or 5.0L OHV v8, 01-present 4.0L OHC or 4.6L v8 are the years (+/- a couple years)

I'm reasonably certain that you have to completely disassemble the A4LD to change the output shaft.

Click on the A4LD exploded view below for larger:

While extension housing Ref. 2 can probably be easily swapped, the output shaft Ref. 8 has a lot of retaining rings holding things to it.

Is this a transmission issue? Even on jack stands and in drive the engine is perfect. I have changed the fuel filter and fuel pump, the air filter, plugs and wires, cap and button, ignition module, and changed the torque converter today the issue got better after changing the torque converter but it still isnt right please help.

You may get better responses in the transmission forum, but I'll refer you to what I just told another guy asking about A4LD problems in his Aerostar:

You need to rebuild you old one, swapping a trans off a Ranger or Explorer is way to much work. If you have to disassemble it anyway, save yourself some money and rebuild the old one. Rebuilds in my experience give more consistent longer lasting results that swapping in someone else's neglected piece of trash thats running on borrowed time. People having good luck with swaps is the exception, not the norm.

Rebuild the thing, thats my vote.
