A4LD swap

does anyone know if i can put a 4R55E out of a 95' explorer in my 94' explorer that i just jerked an A4LD out of? will it physically work? what will i have to do to the wiring, as the 95 has more wires and in slightly different places than the a4ld. any help and details would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
nathan

Physically the 4R55E will fit in place of the A4LD (the 4R55E is sometimes called the A4LDE). They are basically the same transmission, except the 4R55E is all electronically controlled where the A4LD is only partially electronically controlled. Bolting the 4R55E in place of the A4LD will be the easy part.

As for what to do with the wiring...I'm not aware of any commercially available stand-alone controllers for the 4R55E. I've heard an unconfirmed rumor that there is such a thing for the 5R55E, but, as noted, that's unconfirmed. The existing computer in your '94 doesn't have the ability to read the transmission sensors nor is it able to control the shifts.

I'm not certain of all the differences between '95 and '94, but you might have better luck getting the '95 PCM and putting that in and trying to "convert" your '94 into a '95. I've heard differing opinions on this. The '95 4.0 has a little different head/piston design that gives it a little higher compression ratio than the '94. Whether or not a '95 computer will be content to control a '94 block, I don't know.

The easiest route, IMO, would be to buy/build a stand alone transmission controller for the 4R55E. I'm skeptical that you will find a commercially available controller off the shelf. Building your own would depend on a lot of things (how handy you are with electrical wiring, how "automatic" you need it to be, and so forth and so on).

Check this out if you've had it with the Ford trans and don't want to rebuild it.

Scroll down just over half way here:

Page 53 here.

Not sure this will work for your year, but it's another option. There's another site that I found this on, one that has lots of Explorers, and that post never made the light of day due to a link to that site. So, if you want to ditch the weak Ford trans, want a lower 1st gear, and don't want to hire a computer scientist to hook up a newer Ford trans, good luck.

On edit: I see you are working with a '94 Explorer now that I re-read your post. These folks say they're item works on a '94....
