A4LD tranny modulator replacement

Got a '94 Explorer 4WD that needs a new tranny modulator. Is there an easy way to get at it on the side of the tranny? The catalytic converter heat shield is in the way and I can't seem to get it out or gain access to the modulator area without removing the catalytic converter.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Michael

Other's have reported that there is a panel underneath the passenger seat that you can remove to access the modulator.

That's what I've heard too but I have the panel removed on my '92 and it doesn't look like the modulator is accessable through the hole. BUT, this is the second transmission and perhaps Ford didn't put in another A4LD.

I don't have any idea what other choice Ford would have gone with -- the only other automatics that would readily work behind a '94 4.0 would be 3 speed autos (the old C3 for example).

I'm gonna go look through the hole again. I'm pretty sure they didn't put in a C3 though. It does still have OD.

Sorry for the long delay... things keep happening to me...

Well, the vacuum modulator is accessable through the hole in the floorboard--it is mounted on the passenger side of the trans and the bolt that holds it on can be accessed with a wrench through the hole. I can't say that it looks like it would be any easier than removing the heat shield from the cat but I've never tried to remove the heat shield so perhaps it's a big PITA. To me it *looks* like it would be easier than removing the seats and the access panel, but like I said....

No doubt this has been much-discussed due to the general hatred of the A4LD and I'll go try to find the old threads but just how difficult is it to install a different trans? I thought the torque converter had fewer bolts on the C4 etc or does the old torque converter stay on the truck with the new trans? Does the driveshaft need to be changed too?

The auto trans on my '92 is leaking profusely and it's the second trans. I have doubts about the one on my '91 also as it is also a "rebuilt" and for all I know they just put in a junkyard trans and it may die at any time. The transmission place is no longer there. So right now a 3-speed is sounding good, especially if it could be a junkyard trans. Those old transmissions seem to have a good reputation. I have one on my '78 F350 and it's never given me any problems. I think it's a C4 or C6 (3-speed).

I realize this is an old thread but. I just got an 89 super cab ranger with a 2.9 and a4ld. The modulator is eating a quart of ATF to 5 gallons of gas. This thread speaks of an access panel under the passenger set to get at it. I don't see one from underneath on my 89. Can anyone tell me if there is one on mine before I pull the seat and carpet? What is the procedure to replace the modulator if there is no access panel?

'86 f250 c6 leaking

Mine was leaking, still is, but, if I park it nose down, no leak...park it nose up and I lose a lot of fluid. I'll get it fixed soon, but, for now, parking nose down does the trick; it's hilly by my house.

Mine is eating the fluid through the modulator vacuum line. I plugged it and the vacuum line and went to town and back. A 110 mile round trip. It used no fluid but shifted kinda hard. New modulator will be here the end of the week. I hope someone jumps in and will tell me how to get at it to chance it out.
