I just bought my explorer and was wondering if anybody knew about the Auto 4WD. How do you know if it is on? Is there a light telling you it is on. There certainly is a button to press to turn it on. 4X4 High and low there is a light telling you it is on. 4X4 auto I don't know if it is on or off. Is my light broken that tells you this, or is there no light. How are you suppose to keep track when it is on or off. Thanks for all your help
You dont need to know that is why it is labeled "AUTO".
but if you want to test it go to a sandy surface, turn the front wheels at a slight angle and step on it, all 4 wheels should show sign of powering up.
I have a question to this older post - I have an 02 explorer V8 with the auto 4wd function. Is this vehicle equipped with auto locking hubs on the front, or are the hubs always engaged to teh differential and the front drive shaft? It seems that this would decrease gas mileage and cauase additional wear, but I dont see how else the auto4wd could engage in a fraction of a second.
Follow up question - I'm replacing the gear oil in the rear diff, do I need to do the front since the front hubs always seem to be "locked" to the differential? Thanks.
they are always engaged thats how it kicks in so fast. its incredible how quick the front wheels get power. i personally dont like having auto but now my truck isnt like that
