ok, i have a 94 ford ranger, 4x4 4.0 v6, and sometimes, (most of the time) when push the 4 wheel drive button, it goes off, and then i have to back up , but the four wheel drive WILL not disengage, the light's off but i can tell the 4wd is still on, any idea what this is?? thank you

Its the electronic shift motor on the transfer case, it may need to be cleaned. this sounds like your problem, and its pretty common. Usually i thought the 4x4 buttons flashed if there was a problem detected. Another problem might be your t case is disengaging just fine, but your auto locking hubs arent disengaging. you can put the vehicle in park, jack up 1 front tire off the ground and see if it will spin. If it does, then your hubs arent unlocking. you can replace them with the auto locking hubs, or buy a MUCH better set of warn manual locking hubs. You'll find that a new set of auto locking hubs is pretty spendy (i think 500-1000$) and the warn manuals are like 200 or somthing.
thank you for your help i really appreciate it!
another question, is converting to manual locking hub difficult? cuz i would much rather have lockers! thanks quack head
Peter94 was right.appx. $170 for parts +30 or so for labor.Just replaced l/f auto hub on my 97. The 1 hub was $347.65 + $38.00 for labor. Then stopped and asked about Warn manual hubs at a local part store and they gave me the above price but, it was to late coz i already had the one auto installed. If the r/f goes no thinking about it gonna go Warn manuals. good luck.
I think you need some kind of special thing for it. Check out http://www.jamesduff.com/broncoII/drivetrain.html to see what you would need. I cant imagine it would be that terribly difficult, as long as you have some mechanical skill, and that hub tool thing they sell for $12.50.
I jettisoned the auto hubs on my Ranger years ago; replacing with Warn hubs is very straight forward. You may want to visit http://www.warn.com/truck/hubs/hubs.shtml. Make sure you get the hardware to replace the quirky spindle nut and all that Ford has installed and you will also need (find desireable to have) a spanner wrench. You will also need a special wrench to remove the existing spindle nut; rental or borrowing would be the way to go on this one.
I did what SUPJDO did on my 93'. Replaced the auto-lockers with warn manual locking hubs. It was cheap! $250 - installed, and they are a much more dependable unit than those auto-locking hubs. If you are a serious off-roader it's the way to go, if not the auto lockers are ok, much more expensive to fix/replace though. For my 93' one was more than double what the two warns cost installed. I could be wrong, but it sounds like your problem is from the hubs and not the t-case or the servo unit on the t-case because you are getting indication that your t-case is shifting in and out of 4x from the light coming off and on. It's not blinking or just dead so to speak. Can you hear/feal your t-case shifting when you push the button? Might check that to help give you further indication as to weather your problem is there or in the hubs.
yeah it clicks i can hear it, but i also think my passenger side hub it going bad, but it's all good, i want to convert cuz i like mudding a lot
i have a nother problem, i think it's my starter but im not sure
in order to start my truck, i (usually not always) have pop the hood and jump the solenoid w/ a wrench, do u guys think this is my starter??
thanks
quackhead
If you can make the starter work by jumping the solenoid then I would replace the solenoid.
Before you throw new parts at it, check & clean ALL the connections first.
oh yeah, sorry ( my bad) i probably should've added that i already replaced the solenoid but if u think i should buy another one, it's no big deal, its like 7ish dollars, i could replace one, i will, but if that makes a difference, give me a soem input please, ALL suggestions are very much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!
