My wife purchased a new Explorer back just 2 weeks ago and we took are first road trip in it last week. We drove from Batesville MS to Santa Barbara CA in just two and a-half days to see her daughter get married.
Our fuel mileage, according to the trip computer, was 23.2 miles per gallon, with the 4.0 liter V6. Not bad I think considering we had the vehicle loaded down and were driving up some pretty good grades!
Only complaints? It seemed to have a wind noise in the hot, windy, CA desert. This noise was from the outside winds, not road noise, as the sound disappeared when we got to the "cooler" AZ/NM deserts. The highest temp that was shown on the display at the time was 112 degrees.
It drove good and gave no problems over the 4000 plus miles we drove it there and back. Just thought I would share this with you guys!
Oh yeah, the highest we paid for gasoline was in Needles CA....5.09 per gallon.
Yeah, we missed that spot. Good thing we only needed half a tank!
Out of all the places we went through, I could live in AZ. What a great state!
We did take time out to see Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon and the Meteor Crater! One has to see the Grand Canyon in person to really see the beauty in this world wonder. The same can be said for Hoover Dam and the Meteor Crater!
Sounds like you hit most of the good spots here. If you're ever back out this way, check out Lake Havasu (16 miles south of Pilot). We lived in SoCal for 31 years and are REAL glad to be here and not there!!!
