Engine misses/stumbles when cold.

I have a 1995 F350 with a 7.3 with about 195,000 on it. Recently, it has started to miss/stumble when it is cold. It will always start right up, but will die shortly if left at an idle. If I start it up and rev it up, its RPMs will die back and rev back up over and over again. It does not seem to be spewing any smoke, so I am assuming that fuel is not being injected while it is stumbling. If I run it for 5 to 10 minutes, it will run fine.

I recently replaced all 4 of the under valve cover harnesses, both valve cover gaskets, the glow plug relay and replaced one of the connectors to the valve cover gasket. I replaced the wiring because it was burnt and the GPR because it was bad. I do not have a scanner and do not know anybody with one. The engine has plenty of oil in it and has about 1000 miles since the last change.

Any help as to what to check would be greatly appreciated

plug in the block heater over night once and see if it changes. what is the outside temp there. Cold thick oil can cause Romping which could be your problem.

I agree with Tim, sounds like too heavy a weight oil for the temp. Try a 10W-30 or if it's in the low teens, a 5W-30. Let us know after you have it plugged in over night how it starts and what weight oil your running.

Thank for the response.

Unfortunately I do not have a block heater. I live in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:State w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">North Carolina</st1lace></st1:State> and it was only getting down to the 40s at night when I observed this problem. I am running 10w30 in it now. I have to admit that I have not driven it much in the last 6 months because I was putting off the purchase of the wiring harnesses.

Do you think romping could be a problem with lows in the 40s?

Thanks

Well running 10W30 already its probably not the oil. Does it do it when the truck is warm?

The next time it starts romping ,,shut it off & look in the HPOP Res ,,see if its low,, You can also try unplugging the ICP connector ,,See if it smooths out ,,look for oil leaking from the sensor...

Do one test at a time....

Thanks for the great advice. I will check the HPOP Res and unplug the ICP and check for leaks as advised. When I started having this problem, I did not even know that the injectors were actuated by high pressure oil.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

This problem does not happen when the truck is warm.

<o></o>

I did a search on the romping on this sight and I am not sure if I am experiencing romping. I am not just having a fluctuation of RPMs. It seems to me that the injectors are completely stopping and then starting again. The drop in the RPMS is as if the engine has been shut off and turned on again over and over again. This happen at all RPMs until the engine has been running for a while. Is his romping?

My worry is that it is some electronic control device that will finally stop working while I am further from home than AAA will tow me.

<o></o>

Thanks.

It sounds like a Cam Position Sensor now with your further description. THat part should be 25 bucks at the dealer, and you may fall under a recall where they will replace it for free. The CPS is very easy to install, you need a flathead screwdriver a 10mm socket (I use a deepwell) a ratchet and a small extension is preferrable.

i agree with that, throw a cps at it, then go from there. if it continues, then maybe hpop problems or idm? just guessing at this point. with it clearing up when the engine gets warm, hope we aren't missing something with glowplugs.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It worked. I plugged in a new CPS and the injectors cutting out problem went away.

Oddly enough, the truck started spewing white smoke out of the exhaust. I am hopping that this is just a temporary consequence of the computer getting the correct signal for a change. I did not have time to run it for long, but I will run it again tomorrow.
