I shouldn,t have a problem the inlet to the box is 6" and the new filter will be 4" that will give me room to play I know the box doesn,t do any thing but I like the way it looks it is neat and tidy and has a place for the sensor to attach so it won,t be flopping around in the fender somewhere

The person the cut the groove for ease of filter replacement. Mine is so tight, I cut my knuckles when I installed the filter the first time.

Alrighty I was just about to do this mod and I found this wire attached to the airbox. What is it and/or what does it do? And finally do I need it?

That's probably your IAT (intake air temp) sensor- just zip-tie it out of the way somewhere.
