How do you take a vent window out WITHOUT breaking it?
Hey guys, I'm working on my buddy's '56. The day he brought it to me to work on it the vent handle fell off. So he bought some new stainless assemblies from Mid fifties to replace them. Now I know I got to remove the vent window frame, from the truck, I've done this before, but I was wondering if anyone had any brilliant ideas on how to take the vent window glass out of the frame without breaking the glass? It's in on that oil tape or whatever? When I learn how to post pics, I will post some pics of his truck.
Hey Truxx.....Have you tried heating the area that is being held by the tape? It might be more workable if it's warmed up by a hair dryer or such. If it's not in the truck you might even use a heat gun but if still in truck be carefull of the painted areas nearby so you dont blister the paint.
When I did my window glass I also used a small flat screwdriver working one end and then the other sliding it in and prying a little more each time...carefull though, the old glass like to splinter on the edges so watch your eyes!

What I have done is WD-40 the vent real good then very careful use a screw driver and walk the glass out ,a little at a time .keep WD-40 .. It will come out..
If it is new glass it may have been installed with modern adhesives. The old tape method gives with a good soaking in solvent such as mineral spirits (we used to use gasoline, but that's too expensive these days ). Let it soak overnite and it should just slide apart.
If it is still stubborn, I'd lay a block of wood flat on the glass against the frame and bump it with a hammer parallel to the glass rather than trying any prying, that's almost guaranteed to chip it. That what I did to remove the window glass from the original regulators when I put in the electric windows.
Terry you might try to get ahold of this guy and get some pointers. This project sounds right up your alley. You can see how he did his panel and maybe get some ideas for yours

Hey AX, I'll try that? I haven't even started on that part yet. I hate glass work!! Especially taking all the door regulator junk apart to get to the vent window. Of course the truck is slick painted and I have to be VERY careful not to scratch anything!
